Muscle Energy Techniques are a gentle but effective way to restore motion and reduce pain. Here’s how you—as the client—play an active role in the process:
Set
During treatment adopt the suggested starting position and speak up if you discover any discomfort so you can be repositioned.
Surrender
Let your therapist gently stretch the area in question by allowing your body to relax and be moved for you. Try to stay in a resting state without helping your therapist.
Resist
As a slight stretch to the concerned joint is applied by the therapist, you'll be asked to match this pressure by resisting the the stretch in the opposite direction. You’ll apply a light force (about 5-10% effort) against the therapists guidance for a few seconds. Try to keep this hold without any acceleration by working together with the therapist.
Relax
When asked, you'll let go of the hold and do your best to relax and wait a moment with out any resistance before the practitioner will gently mobilize the joint for you.
Reset
We’ll go through a few cycles to achieve maximum effect.
This collaborative approach helps recalibrate your muscles, improve alignment, and restore balance in a way that feels empowering and effective. There are several different approaches to METs, but this is the most common approach used at Oak Osteo
